Oorspr. uitg.: 1981. - Een geniale Amerikaan trekt met vrouw en vier kinderen de jungle van Honduras in om te ontkomen aan de verstikking van de Westerse beschaving. This is the story of a demented genius, Allie Fox, who leaves the United States with his family to go to a place called "The Mosquito Coast". He wants to escape the world as we know it, and create his own society. His wife and children obediently go with him and for a while it does seem that their new life will be a success. The father soon finds that in bringing progress to the primative new land, he creates the same problems that he was trying to escape. This very powerful story is told through the eyes of the oldest son, Charlie, whose love/hate relationship with his father runs the course of all the emotions known to man.
