Two days before Christmas, Matthies attempts to skate across the ice to "the other side." He falls through the ice and dies. The parents remain silent about their son's death. She seeks solace in extreme ways from her brother Obbe and sister Hanna, but in vain. When the foot-and-mouth disease crisis strikes, the atmosphere in the strictly Protestant family becomes even more oppressive. For Jas (Coat) the other side remains a symbol of escape from her oppressive existence.
